The creek arm
Langston sits on the east shore at Tennessee River mile 377, roughly 30 miles upstream of Guntersville Dam. South Sauty Creek runs 32.25 miles, forms the Buck’s Pocket canyon, and enters the lake at Morgan’s Cove.
Two marinas serve the arm: South Sauty Creek Campground & Marina and Little Mountain Marina Camping Resort. The South Sauty causeway ramp sits on the Marshall/Jackson county line, which is the practical launch reference for most work on this water.
Siltation
South Sauty is among the creek arms that have silted considerably, along with Mud Creek and North Sauty. Silt does not damage a structure — it removes the water under it.
Access & scheduling
Submerged stump fields are extensive throughout the lake, and old stream-channel ledges of limestone run through it. Both decide where a piling can actually be driven. A stump or a ledge under an intended piling location means jetting the piling in or relocating the footprint, and either one changes the day’s plan if it is discovered with the barge already tied off.
So the order of work here is probe first, then price, then schedule. On this arm we would rather spend an afternoon reading the bottom than a week working around it.
One thing works in your favor: the narrow creek arm reduces fetch and wake exposure. This is one of the few places on the lake where lighter framing is defensible, because the repeating wake load that governs main-channel docks is simply not present.
The town
Langston is an incorporated town with a population of 265 at the 2020 census. It was incorporated in 1899 and reincorporated in 1980. It is a small place on a long creek, and nearly all of the dock work here is on that creek.
