How they fail here
A piling on a tributary lake weathers across ten or twenty feet of its length. A piling here weathers across two. Winter pool sits near 593 feet, summer operating range is 594 to 595, and that narrow strip of timber goes wet and dry, wet and dry, for the life of the dock.
The result is hourglassing: a piling that measures full section at the deck and full section below the mud line, but has necked down at the waterline where the cycling has been. Load capacity follows the smallest section. That is why a dock with a visible lean usually has nothing wrong with its tip bearing — the wood simply lost section eighteen inches below the boards.
Below the water, marine borers are not the issue they are in brackish water. Above the band, the wood is often still serviceable. Both facts matter, because they are the reason selective replacement works here instead of tearing out an entire pile field.
Driving hammers the pile to refusal and leaves the surrounding soil compacted, which is the stronger result where the bottom will take it. Jetting uses a water lance to fluidize soil ahead of the tip so the pile sinks in — faster in sand and silt, and often the only option in the softer creek-arm bottoms upriver.
The tradeoff is bearing: a jetted pile has to be driven the last stretch, or re-driven after the soil sets up, or it will not hold what a driven pile holds. On silted bottoms we jet to depth and finish with the hammer.
Because the lake never drops enough to strand a dock, all of this happens from a barge, in any month.

Probe it at the waterline with an awl or a screwdriver. Sound treated timber resists; failing timber takes the point with light pressure. Look for hourglass narrowing at the waterline, a lean off vertical, and hardware that has started pulling out of the wood. A piling can look fine from the deck and be half gone twelve inches down.
Sometimes. Where the core is sound and the loss is local, a piling can be sistered — a new member driven alongside and through-bolted so the load transfers past the damaged band. Where the section is necked down at the waterline, where the piling has moved, or where the tip has lost bearing, it gets replaced. Sistering a piling that has lost bearing just adds weight to a bad foundation.
